The Balvenie Twenty-Five from the Rare Marriages range is a 25 year old single malt Scotch whisky bottled at 48% ABV (96 proof), crafted at The Balvenie distillery in Dufftown, Speyside. It combines whisky matured for a quarter century in American oak ex-bourbon barrels with a smaller proportion aged in European oak ex-Oloroso sherry puncheons, the two strands married together in a traditional tun before bottling without chill filtration and at natural colour.

Rare Marriages launched in 2021 as a three-strong collection of 25, 30 and 40 year old whiskies, conceived by Malt Master David C. Stewart MBE as a showcase for the art he refined over more than half a century with William Grant & Sons: marrying casks. Rather than celebrating a single barrel, the range celebrates the judgment involved in combining many, letting bourbon-cask brightness and sherry-cask depth settle into one seamless whole during their time in the marrying tun.

The Twenty-Five is the range's opening statement, and it drinks like one. Honey and orchard fruit rise first on the nose, followed by bold vanilla, toasted marshmallow, fruit terrine and a cinnamon-laced apple tart character that carries through a long, gently spiced finish. The 48% strength is high enough to keep the old malt vivid, yet the quarter century of oak keeps everything rounded and composed.

This is Balvenie for the drinker who has graduated beyond age statements as mere numbers and wants to taste blending craft at its most refined. It stands well against sherried Speyside stalwarts, yet its balance of American and European oak makes it distinctly Balvenie, from a distillery founded in 1892 that still grows barley, malts on its own floors and employs its own coopers and coppersmiths. Because the range initially rolled out through select travel retail before wider release, the Twenty-Five also carries a touch of scarcity beyond its age. Serve it neat, in good company, with time to spare; a whisky married this carefully deserves an unhurried glass.
