The 2002 Springbank 14 Year Old Bourbon Wood is a vintage-dated rarity from Campbeltown's most tradition-bound distillery: a Springbank matured start to finish in ex-bourbon casks alone. Because the house's limited releases so often carry sherry or wine finishes, an all-bourbon-wood statement like this one stands out as a purist's snapshot of the naked distillery character.
Every drop was distilled in November 2002 and bottled in August 2017 at a full cask strength of 55.8% ABV (111.6 proof). Fewer than forty fresh and refill bourbon barrels made up the vatting, yielding a worldwide outturn of just 9,000 bottles. As with all Springbank, the barley was floor-malted on site and the spirit ran through the distillery's famous two-and-a-half-times distillation before a long sleep in the seaside warehouses.
American oak lets the coastal DNA speak plainly: cream, vanilla extract, and salted popcorn on the nose, then bold orchard apple and pear, cut hay, crystalline citrus, and toffee across the palate, all shaded by Springbank's gentle earthy smoke. The finish turns maritime — sea spray, marshmallow sweetness, and a mineral echo that lingers well after the glass is empty.
Vintage-statement Springbank from the 2002 distillation season has become steadily harder to find intact, and enthusiasts rate this bottling among the finest bourbon-cask expressions the distillery has issued.
