The 2023 Remus Gatsby Reserve is the second edition of the ultra-aged flagship that tops the Remus range each autumn, a 15 year old straight bourbon offered at cask strength and landing at 98.1 proof. Where the debut drew from a single stream of stock, this follow-up marries two distinct 15 year old high-rye recipes, giving the sophomore release its own darker, more brooding personality.
Crafted by Master Distiller Ian Stirsman at Ross & Squibb Distillery, the 175 year old Lawrenceburg, Indiana whiskey house long known as MGP, the 2023 blend unites bourbon distilled from a 75% corn, 21% rye, 4% malted barley mash bill with a spicier 60% corn, 36% rye, 4% malted barley recipe. Both components rested a full decade and a half in new charred oak before being married and bottled without dilution in October 2023.
That extra rye content shows. The nose opens on seasoned oak, molasses, and stewed dark fruit, and the palate follows with burnt sugar, espresso, black pepper, and clove wrapped around a dense, chewy midpalate. Years of gentle proof migration in the barrel left it at drinking strength straight from the cask, so the finish stretches long through charred oak, dark chocolate, and warming spice.
Issued in ultra-limited quantities as part of the brand's tribute to F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel and its Prohibition-era muse, the 2023 edition stands clearly apart from its inaugural sibling: higher rye influence, deeper oak, and a bolder, spicier arc from nose to finish.
