Pōkeno Prohibition Porter Oloroso Sherry Cask Finish is what happens when a whisky distillery and a craft brewery trade barrels. This limited New Zealand single malt was created in collaboration with Liberty Brewing, whose cult Prohibition Porter — a dense, chocolatey dark beer — left its mark on the very wood used to complete this whisky.
The process ran in two acts. The malt first spent three years maturing in Oloroso sherry casks, soaking up dried fruit and nutty richness. Meanwhile, Pōkeno lent a barrel to Liberty Brewing to mature its porter; once the beer was done, the cask came home, and the sherried whisky went in for a final finishing period.
The result is remarkably plush. Cocoa and dark chocolate from the porter-seasoned wood fold into the raisin and fig sweetness of Oloroso, with roasted coffee, toasted malt, and toffee rounding out the palate. At 46% ABV it stays silky and rich, with a warm, mocha-tinged finish that lingers well past the last sip.
Part whisky, part brewing history, this release captures a genuinely local partnership between two independent New Zealand producers — and a flavor profile no conventional cask program could replicate.
