The 2020 Nikka Miyagikyo Apple Brandy Wood Finish is a limited single malt with a love story behind it, commemorating the 100th anniversary of the 1920 marriage of founder Masataka Taketsuru and his Scottish wife Rita. The apple brandy casks are no arbitrary flourish: in the company's earliest years, apple juice and apple products from Yoichi sustained the young business while its first whisky slept in wood.
The malt was distilled at Miyagikyo, the gentle, fruit-leaning distillery in the hills outside Sendai, and matured in ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks before a final finishing period in barrels that previously held Nikka's own apple brandy. That orchard-scented wood overlays the distillery's floral house style with baked apple and soft spice. It is bottled at 94 proof (47% ABV), and a peated Yoichi counterpart finished the same way was issued alongside it in 2020.
The nose is perfumed with fresh apple, ripe pear, honey, vanilla, and a dusting of cinnamon over subtle cereal and leather. The palate is silky and elegant — apple pie, caramel, orchard fruit, and candied ginger with a whisper of peat — while the medium-long finish stays sweet and clean, leaving white fruit, toasted bread, and lingering vanilla.
As a one-time anniversary edition allocated tightly around the world, the Apple Brandy Wood Finish has become one of the more sought-after modern Miyagikyo bottlings.
