Nelcius Merlot Cask Finish Single Malt French Whisky brings together two of France's great crafts: malt distilling and Bordeaux winemaking. Produced at Château Laujac in the heart of the Médoc, an estate long associated with the Duboscq family, this single malt is finished in wine casks drawn straight from the property's own cellars.
Nelcius is a wholly French project from field to bottle. The barley is grown, malted, and distilled in France, and the spirit is double distilled in small Carle-style pot stills, a gentle approach chosen to preserve delicate aromatics and a silky texture. After initial maturation in French oak, the whisky moves into casks that previously held the estate's Merlot, resting there until the wine influence is fully woven into the malt.
The Merlot wood gives this expression its plush, red-fruited personality. The nose suggests ripe plum, red cherry, and cocoa over a base of malted cereal and light toast. On the palate, orange caramel and chocolate mingle with soft vine-fruit tannin, and the 46% ABV bottling strength keeps the finish structured, dry, and quietly spicy rather than sweet.
French single malt remains a small and adventurous category, and wine-cask expressions like this one show why it is worth exploring. Serve it neat after dinner, ideally alongside dark chocolate or washed-rind cheese, and give it ten minutes in the glass to let the fruit unfold.
