Mitchell & Son Green Spot Château Montelena is a wine-cask collaboration between Ireland's original bonder's whiskey and one of Napa Valley's most storied estates. Green Spot — the only Spot whiskey to survive the twentieth century in continuous production, once sold almost exclusively from Mitchell & Son's Dublin premises — is here finished in Zinfandel wine casks from Château Montelena, the Calistoga winery whose Chardonnay famously won the 1976 Judgment of Paris.
The base is classic Green Spot: single pot still Irish whiskey triple distilled at Midleton Distillery in County Cork from a mash of malted and unmalted barley, matured in ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks. It then spends an additional finishing period in French oak barrels that previously held Château Montelena's Estate Zinfandel, and is bottled at 92 proof (46% ABV) without chill filtration — a step up in strength from the standard Green Spot.
The Zinfandel casks bring a distinctly American accent to the Irish pot still profile. The nose offers ripe red berries, plum, and vanilla with a hint of baking spice. The palate is rich and rounded — luscious dark fruit, toasted oak, brown sugar, and creamy barley — balanced by the peppery snap of pot still, closing on a long, warm finish where berry sweetness and gentle tannin linger.
Introduced in 2016 with a focus on the American market, it is the second of three Green Spot wine-cask editions, alongside Château Léoville Barton (Bordeaux) and Quails' Gate (Okanagan Pinot Noir). A limited release for collectors of the full Spot family.
