The 2015 Michter's US-1 Toasted Barrel Finish Bourbon is bottled at 91.4 proof (45.7% ABV) and is distilled and bottled in Kentucky by Michter's. A small-batch, limited release, the 2015 edition was the second-ever bottling of the category-defining expression, again selected under Master Distiller Willie "Dr. No" Pratt.
It is made by taking Michter's US-1 Kentucky Straight Bourbon and aging it for an additional period in a second custom barrel, assembled from 18-month air-dried wood and toasted but never charred. The achievement is remarkable for what it is not: Kentucky Straight Bourbon with nothing extra added or done except placement in that second toasted barrel, where caramelized wood sugars draw out deeper flavor. Michter's launched the Toasted Barrel Finish program in the fall of 2014 as the first toasted barrel whiskey ever released in America, and the expression appears only from time to time as a small-batch limited release. Following the groundbreaking 2014 debut, the 2015 release helped the Toasted Barrel Finish Bourbon build a devoted following among drinkers drawn to its unusual, dessert-like depth.
The toasting gives the bourbon its signature character: campfire and cinnamon with pecan and candied fruit, and a lingering finish of baked pears, vanilla, and marshmallow. Michter's continues the legacy of a company that traces its roots to 1753 and the original Shenk's distillery, and it stands today among the most admired names in American whiskey. As one of the two earliest releases of the program and a Willie Pratt-era bottling, the 2015 is an increasingly hard-to-find vintage for collectors building a Toasted Barrel Finish vertical. Like the 2014 that preceded it, the 2015 takes fully matured bourbon and rests it in a second toasted barrel for a short, carefully judged finishing period — long enough to add toasted-wood richness without tipping into heavy oak. Early Toasted Barrel Finish bottlings like this one are now genuinely scarce on retail shelves.
