The Matsui 5 Year Old Sakura Cask spent its entire five-year maturation inside a single 220-liter cask coopered from Japanese cherry wood, then went to bottle as a limited single-cask release in the 750ml format.

This is single malt in the strict sense: whisky distilled at Matsui's own Kurayoshi Distillery in Tottori Prefecture, from malted barley, in the producer's own stills. Where the house's pure malt bottlings celebrate the blender's art, The Matsui line documents what the distillery itself makes — and a full-term cherry cask is among the boldest statements in that catalog.

Sakura is almost never used for whisky maturation. The wood is soft, aromatic, and difficult to cooper, and most producers who attempt it settle for a brief finishing period. Committing new-make spirit to cherry wood for five full years lets the cask write the whole story, saturating the malt with floral perfume and temple-incense character that no species of oak can imitate.

The nose opens on cherry blossom and fresh mint over plum and dark cherry, with cedar chest and incense beneath. The palate is silky and gently sweet, showing red fruit, polished wood, and a cool herbal thread that runs clear to the finish. Strength varies from cask to cask across these limited bottlings, so expect a whisky measured in character rather than heat — and one that no two casks will ever repeat exactly.
