Matsui Shuzo has called Kurayoshi home since 1910, when the family firm began making sake and shochu in this quiet former castle town on Japan's San'in coast. Tottori Prefecture's defining resource is its water: snowmelt from Mt. Daisen seeps through layers of volcanic rock for decades before emerging as the soft spring water used to bring every bottle of The Kurayoshi to strength. That water lends the whisky its gentle, rounded core.
The Kurayoshi carries the designation pure malt, the Japanese term for a blended malt whisky. There is no grain spirit in the vatting — only whiskies distilled entirely from malted barley, drawn from more than one distillery and married under the Matsui team's supervision. The style puts the emphasis on the blender rather than a single still, and the goal here is harmony, with no lone cask allowed to dominate the profile.
Maturation takes place in white oak casks, and the whisky is bottled at 43% ABV (86 proof). The nose offers fresh, sweet malt with a fruity lift; the palate balances raisin and nut character against vanilla and a clean, faintly bitter oak edge that keeps each sip refreshing. True to the house style, the finish is mild yet deep.
This 700ml bottling is the format Matsui Shuzo sends to most export markets, and the expression earned Category Winner honors at the World Whiskies Awards in 2024. Take it neat to study the malt, or stretch it with soda in a Japanese-style highball, where its soft texture and delicate sweetness come into sharpest focus. It is an easy introduction to the Japanese blended malt category and a natural counterpoint to the single malt bottlings made on the same site.
