The Macallan Edition No. 5 Single Malt Scotch Whisky, released in 2019 at 48.5% ABV, is the fifth release of the Edition Series, the annual limited-edition programme from The Macallan Distillery in Craigellachie, Speyside that ran from 2015 to 2020. Its subject is colour - specifically The Macallan's insistence on 100% natural colour - and it was created in collaboration with the Pantone Color Institute, the global authority on colour standards. Each annual edition explored one facet of whisky creation; No. 5 chose the most visible of all.
For the packaging, Pantone's designers developed a uniquely bold, bespoke shade of purple - chosen, in Pantone's telling, because purple is the rainbow's most complex colour, a match for the complexity of natural whisky making. Inside the bottle, the whisky was matured in American oak casks and bottled without the use of spirit caramel, so every tone in the glass is won from the wood itself. Macallan whisky maker Sarah Burgess framed the craft in a painter's terms: a specific palette of colours from the cask is the starting point of creation.
The nose offers oak, nutmeg and ginger; the palate follows with poached peaches and ripe pear layered over sweet caramel and oak spice, the signature of American oak maturation. At 48.5% ABV, Edition No. 5 is bright, sweet and precise, its honeyed fruit character standing apart from the deeper European-oak richness found elsewhere in the series - a deliberate demonstration of how cask choice writes colour and flavour together.
Edition No. 5 is the most instantly recognisable bottle of the run - its purple pack has become visual shorthand for the entire 2015-2020 series - and its natural-colour theme speaks to the heart of The Macallan's identity. As the penultimate chapter of a completed six-edition set, it is both a striking display piece and a key step in the sequence, the bottle that gives any complete Edition Series collection its flash of colour.
