The Macallan Edition No. 4 Single Malt Scotch Whisky, released in 2018 at 48.4% ABV, is the fourth instalment of the Edition Series, the annual limited-release run from The Macallan Distillery in Craigellachie, Speyside that spanned 2015 to 2020. Its theme is structure: after editions devoted to cask influence and to aroma, No. 4 set out to reveal how a single malt is actually built, and it arrived in the same year The Macallan opened its striking new distillery on the Easter Elchies estate.
The whisky takes direct inspiration from the construction of that new distillery and is described as exposing the role each cask plays across the whisky-making process. It is crafted from a combination of sherry-seasoned European and American oak - 500-litre butts and puncheons alongside 250-litre hogsheads - sourced from four cooperages in Jerez: Tevasa, Jose y Miguel Martin, Diego Martin Rosado and Vasyma. Presented at natural colour and without an age statement, it is a study in how wood species, cask size and seasoning interlock to shape a finished single malt.
In the glass, Edition No. 4 is zesty, vibrant and invigorating. Rounded honey and sweet toffee anchor the palate while citrus fruits brighten the edges, and the 48.4% ABV bottling strength keeps the profile fresh, precise and energetic rather than heavy. It is a lighter-footed, more architectural expression than The Macallan's sherry-rich reputation might suggest, and that is exactly the point: structure, not just cask, shaping character.
As the 2018 chapter, No. 4 occupies a pivotal place in the completed series - the edition that coincided with the opening of one of the most ambitious distillery buildings in Scotland. For collectors of the six-bottle run, it marks the moment The Macallan's past and future met on the Easter Elchies estate, and its structural theme makes it the intellectual centrepiece of a series that concluded, definitively, in 2020. Six years, six themes, six strengths: within that architecture, structure is the keystone.
