The Gold Route is the second chapter of the Explorers' Club Collection, released in 2013 for the world's travellers and inspired by the treasure routes of the Americas — through Central America, over the Andes and along the Pacific coast, where gold and exotic fruit once moved by ship and mule train. Presented in a one-litre bottle at 40% ABV, it is the sun-drenched, fruit-laden counterpoint to its spicier predecessor.

Like the rest of the Trade Routes Series, The Gold Route carries no age statement and was composed flavour-first from Diageo's Scottish distilleries, with maturation in American oak shaping its sweet, rounded core. The series honoured the epic journeys of Walker's early agents, who carried the striding man to every inhabited continent; this release imagines the cargo holds of the New World run — gold, fruit and adventure in equal measure. Where The Spice Road looked east, this blend faces the setting sun — brighter, sweeter and built around the flavours of the tropics.

The nose spills over with tropical dried fruit: pineapple, mango and citrus zest alongside leather, barley and cracked black pepper, with wisps of smoke behind. The palate delivers honeyed vanilla and caramelised fruit sweetness before ginger spice, light salinity and a soft bed of peat carry the finish. It is arguably the most immediately charming blend of the collection — bright, generous and dangerously easy to pour again. There is real complexity beneath the charm for those who linger over it.

The Explorers' Club Collection was ultimately retired, and full-litre bottles of The Gold Route have become collectors' quarry as a result. It rewards neat sipping, but its tropical register also makes it a spectacular base for a whisky Daiquiri twist or a simple Highball with a lime peel. Alongside The Spice Road and The Royal Route, it completes one of the most evocative trilogies the house ever produced.
