Every zodiac cycle begins with the Rat, and in 2020 Johnnie Walker celebrated that fresh start with a Blue Label limited edition honoring the cleverest of the twelve animals. First to answer the Jade Emperor's call in legend, the rat stands for wit, enterprise and adaptability, the pioneering spirit that turns a new year into a new beginning. The release arrived in January 2020, ahead of the new year that opened on 25 January.
The artwork comes from award-winning Chinese artist Shirley Gong, who set out to capture the intelligence and quick-footed charm of her subject while creating something elegant enough to honor the rarest blend in the Johnnie Walker portfolio. Her intricate illustration wraps bottle and presentation box alike, weaving symbols of prosperity and abundance through a vivid, richly colored design intended as a piece of art in its own right. Gong wanted the finished work to give people hope for the coming year, and it reads as a celebration first and a package second.
The whisky is Blue Label through and through: a marriage of scarce malt and grain casks, some from distilleries that vanished decades ago, chosen at a rate of about one in ten thousand. The house describes this bottling as velvety smooth with vibrant fruit and rich spice, and the glass bears that out, layering toffee and dark fruit over gentle pepper before a warm, lingering smokiness carries the finish home.
Rat years are for beginnings: new ventures, new homes, first toasts of a new cycle. That makes the 2020 edition a meaningful marker for anyone whose story turned that year, and an anchor bottle for collectors starting the full twelve-animal set from the top. Like its predecessors it was produced once and retired, its place at the head of the series secure. Open it when something new deserves an old whisky.
