Strength, patience and honest work define the Year of the Ox, and Johnnie Walker's 2021 Lunar New Year edition of Blue Label carries those virtues in gold. Released for the new year beginning in February 2021, it followed a year that had tested everyone, and its imagery of steady ascent and coming prosperity landed with particular force. It was the eighth annual zodiac release, and by then the series had become one of the most anticipated yearly rituals in luxury Scotch. The ox promises that effort, sustained long enough, becomes fortune.
Chinese artist Shirley Gong returned for a second consecutive edition, one of the few artists entrusted with back-to-back releases in the series. Her design sets a majestic golden ox high above mountain clouds, surrounded by celebratory lanterns and drifting cherry blossom, heralding a year of good fortune and great achievement. The illustration flows across bottle and box in rich blues and golds, as intricate as the previous year's Rat and even more serene.
The blend beneath the artwork is unchanged in its ambitions: Johnnie Walker Blue Label, assembled from casks selected at roughly one in ten thousand from reserves that include irreplaceable ghost-distillery stock. This bottling leans into the blend's deeper registers, with dark chocolate, dried fruit and toffee framing the familiar honey and hazelnut, all resolved in a long, velvet-smoke conclusion. It was among the final Lunar editions crafted under Master Blender Jim Beveridge's long stewardship.
The ox stands for diligence and dependability, which makes this edition a fitting tribute to the steady hands in any family or firm: the builders, the providers, the ones who show up.
