Once every sixty years the zodiac produces a Wood Dragon, the rarest alignment of its mightiest sign, and Johnnie Walker answered the occasion with one of the most celebrated releases in its Lunar New Year series. Issued for the new year beginning on 10 February 2024, this Blue Label limited edition pairs the dragon's legendary strength and ambition with the wood element's promise of growth, flexibility and renewal. It was also the first of two consecutive designs from the same artist.
The artwork belongs to James Jean, the Taiwanese-American visual artist whose intricate, mythology-steeped style has graced museums, films and global fashion houses. Jean conjures an evergreen wood dragon springing from bountiful flora and fauna, emerging from an ancient forest as a living symbol of creativity and coming prosperity. The creature coils across bottle and box in luminous greens and golds, embodying what the brand calls the defiant optimism of Keep Walking, and every angle of the design offers new detail.
Beneath the artwork waits Johnnie Walker Blue Label, the blend for which only about one cask in ten thousand is judged worthy, drawn by Master Blender Dr Emma Walker and her team from reserves that include long-closed distilleries. The dragon edition pours with characteristic silkiness: honeyed fruit and hazelnut first, then waves of spice, sherry and dark chocolate, and finally the slow, velvety smoke that lingers like incense. Each bottle is individually numbered.
Dragon years mark destinies; wood dragon years mark generations. Children born, ventures launched and marriages made in 2024 carry a sign that will not return until 2084, and this bottle is their keepsake. Released once and retired, it stands among the most sought-after links in the twelve-animal chain.
