Jack Daniel's Distillery Series No. 16 Table Syrup Barrel Finish Tennessee Rye Whiskey captures a whimsical and highly creative technical exploration of wood finishing within the historic walls of Lynchburg. As part of the house's experimental, small-batch Distillery Series, this release pushes the traditional boundaries of American rye by introducing a unique Southern confectionary twist. The foundation is built from Jack Daniel's standard rye whiskey, which first undergoes a base maturation of over five years in standard new charred white oak barrels. It is then transferred into barrels that previously held a traditional Southern-style table syrup, constructed from corn and cane sugar syrups, molasses, and honey, for an extensive secondary finish of more than three years. Because this experimental approach balances aggressive grain spice against deep, sugary wood seasoning, it delivers an unprecedented sweet-and-savory harmony that highlights the outer limits of cask manipulation.

The development of Selection No. 16 was driven by Jack Daniel's Barrel Maturation Manager and Master Taster Byron Copeland, who sought to use the bold, complex canvas of Tennessee rye to showcase a truly local barrel treatment. Before filling the original casks, the raw distillate underwent the distillery's iconic Lincoln County Process, dripping slowly through a tailored layer of sugar maple charcoal. Because the high-rye mashbill naturally yields fewer heavy corn oils, the distillers utilized 30 percent less charcoal than their flagship Tennessee whiskey, perfectly preserving the lively, grain-forward character of the spirit. The subsequent three-year secondary soak in the syrup-infused wood naturally concentrated the liquids' sugars. Dumped at a robust barrel-proof strength of 111.4, this expression is bottled completely un-diluted to showcase the unadulterated synergy between spicy grain and dessert-like wood extraction.

Inside the collectible, flask-style 375ml bottle lies a wonderfully layered, playful profile that deftly balances a massive explosion of baking heat with rich breakfast sweets. The pour greets the palate with an inviting aroma of dried banana chips, honey buns, and toasted pecans, which quickly transitions into a dynamic mid-palate bursting with sharp rye spice, black tea, anise, and a punchy note of ancho pepper. Heavy layers of maple cake, thin syrup, and salted caramel try to soften the back half, but the vibrant, peppery grain holds its ground right through to the dry, oaky finish. Originally debuted at Lynchburg's White Rabbit Bottle Shop as a hyper-exclusive Tennessee allocation, this expression stands as an indispensable crown jewel for avid collectors seeking the most adventurous, boundary-pushing fluid experiments the house has ever produced.
