Jack Daniel's Distillery Series No. 17 High Angel's Share Straight Tennessee Whiskey captures the raw, uncompromising power of nature's filtration within Lynchburg’s most legendary maturation microclimate. As part of the house's experimental, hyper-limited Distillery Series, this release pushes the traditional boundaries of Tennessee whiskey by letting the elements dictate the final profile. Laid down in 2016, these barrels spent a decade resting on the absolute top floor of Coy Hill Barrelhouse 1-13—the highest point on the distillery campus. The intense, suffocating summer heat at the apex of the rickhouse forced an extraordinarily high evaporation rate, squeezing the wood for its life to yield a deeply concentrated, low-volume treasure. Because this high angel's share process fundamentally reshapes the liquid, every precious drop left behind holds a profound density of flavor.
The vision for Selection #017 grew from the careful curation of Jack Daniel's Whiskey Taster Dale McGee, who recognized that these extreme-aging barrels had developed a completely distinct personality from the flagship stock. Before entering the charred American white oak barrels, the raw distillate underwent the historic Lincoln County Process, dripping slowly through ten feet of sugar maple charcoal to establish its smooth, classic Tennessee baseline. Ten years in the atmospheric crucible of Coy Hill did the rest. Unfiltered and un-diluted, the small batch was dumped and bottled at a staggering 138.4 batch proof, transforming a familiar heritage mashbill into an unapologetic, mouth-coating powerhouse that showcases the outer limits of wood interaction.
Inside the flask-style 375ml bottle is an intensely rich, dessert-forward spirit that drinks with a surprising, well-suppressed elegance despite its immense proof. The highly concentrated liquid immediately coats the palate in rich brown sugar, decadent maple syrup, and heavy banana nut bread, balanced beautifully by waves of dark toasted oak, cherry cola, and warm baking spices. It is a spectacular monument to the art of barrel placement, retaining the unmistakable core character of the historic Jack Daniel Distillery while magnifying its depth to an astonishing scale. Originally intended as an exclusive release for Tennessee collectors and visitors to the distillery's White Rabbit Bottle Shop, this expression stands as a true crown jewel and an indispensable bottle for anyone tracking the house's peak high-proof achievements.
