The Glenlivet 'Enigma' Single Malt Scotch Whisky is a 121.2 proof (60.6% ABV), 750ml limited-edition single malt from The Glenlivet distillery in Speyside, released in 2019 as a United States exclusive. The fourth chapter of the celebrated mystery series, Enigma appeared in a matte-black bottle disclosing nothing beyond its formidable strength: no age statement, no cask details, and no tasting notes, in keeping with the series' code of silence.
Enigma's distinct angle is that it brought the mystery concept home to American drinkers as their own finale-scale event, the only edition in the run reserved solely for the US market. True to form, the distillery buried the answers in a game: buyers could work through a crossword-style digital puzzle to unlock tasting cues piece by piece. It is also by far the most powerful whisky of the series, bottled at a strength that dwarfs the 48% and 50% of its predecessors. No tasting notes were ever printed, and the distillery offered nothing but the puzzle itself as a guide.
At full cask-driven intensity, the classic Glenlivet fruitiness turns vivid and concentrated, with the depth and heat of 60.6% demanding a slow, considered approach, and richly repaying a few drops of water. The critics who tasted it blind were convinced: Whisky Advocate placed Enigma at No. 8 on its Top 20 whiskies of 2019, a striking endorsement for a bottle that arrived with no story printed on it at all.
