The Glenlivet 'Cipher' Single Malt Scotch Whisky is bottled at 96 proof (48% ABV) in a 700ml format, a limited-edition Speyside single malt released in 2016 by The Glenlivet, the Pernod Ricard-owned distillery founded by George Smith in 1824. Cipher is the sequel to 2013's Alpha, reviving the mystery-whisky concept in an entirely opaque black bottle that reveals nothing about age, casks, or character, only the strength printed on the glass.
Where Alpha asked drinkers to taste blind, Cipher asked them to decode. The whisky was drawn from a cask combination that Master Distiller Alan Winchester said had never before been used at the distillery, and it was bottled without chill filtration to preserve texture. Owners were invited to work through a dedicated flavour wheel online, selecting the aromas and flavours they detected and testing their palate against a handful of clues and tasting prompts from Winchester himself before the answer was made public.
In the glass, Cipher plays a knowing game with the classic Glenlivet profile. The house signature of orchard fruit, honeyed sweetness, and soft floral notes is present, but the undisclosed cask recipe threads in unexpected spice and richer, darker tones designed to keep even seasoned Speyside drinkers guessing. At 48% and non-chill-filtered, it carries more weight and grip than the core range, which makes the puzzle all the more absorbing to work through slowly.
As the second chapter of the mystery series, Cipher occupies a pivotal place in the run: around 33,000 bottles were produced for roughly two dozen markets, bottled in August 2016. It is the release that turned a one-off experiment into a continuing tradition, bridging Alpha's debut and the later Code, Enigma, and Spectra editions. For anyone assembling the full mystery-series lineage, the black-glass Cipher is an essential and distinctive silhouette on the shelf. Sealed examples in the original packaging are the ones enthusiasts prize most.
