Glenfiddich 14 Year Old Bourbon Barrel Reserve Single Malt Scotch Whisky was created specifically for the American market, a Speyside malt that tips its hat to Kentucky. It is the Glenfiddich to hand a bourbon drinker: fourteen years of Scottish patience delivered with the sweet, charred-oak accent of new American wood.
The whisky matures for fourteen years in ex-bourbon casks, absorbing classic vanilla and honeyed oak, before a finishing spell in deep-charred new American oak barrels. That heavy char acts like a flavor amplifier, caramelizing the wood sugars and layering the spirit with a toasted sweetness rarely found in Scotch. Bottling comes at 43% ABV, a notch above standard strength for extra presence in the glass.
Aromas of ripe summer fruit, woody spice and rounded vanilla lead into a palate of sweet oak, caramelized sugar, butterscotch and warm cinnamon. The charred barrels leave a toasty, faintly smoky-sweet edge on the finish, which fades slowly through vanilla cream and soft baking spice.
Bourbon Barrel Reserve makes an inspired bridge bottle for whiskey drinkers crossing the Atlantic in either direction, and it stands up admirably in an old fashioned built around single malt. Keep it beside the ryes and bourbons on the bar cart; it will hold the conversation with any of them.
