Tres Amigos toasts the three great spirits of North America: whiskey, rum, and tequila. Rather than simply naming the trio, this Exploratory Cask release runs one rye through the barrels of all three, a triple-cask journey that few whiskey makers have attempted and fewer have pulled off with this much restraint.
The journey starts with two rye distillates, one a spice-forward 95% rye with 5% malted barley, the other a rounder recipe of 51% rye, 45% corn, and 4% malted barley. After roughly five years and ten months in char #4 American oak, the married blend moved into an ex-rum cask solera for about a year, soaking up molasses sweetness, before a final seven months in casks that previously held añejo tequila.
Each stage leaves fingerprints without erasing the rye. The rum solera contributes brown sugar and tropical warmth; the agave casks add a green, peppery brightness that lifts the whole pour. Bottled at 96 proof, it opens with baked spiced pears and agave syrup on the nose, then layers vanilla, white pepper, and pineapple skin across the palate before a warm, gently sweet finish.
This is a whiskey for the adventurous drinker who keeps rum and tequila on the same shelf as rye. Serve it neat to trace each cask's contribution, or use it as the backbone of a border-crossing Old Fashioned with a strip of orange peel and a pinch of patience.
