Dalmore King Alexander III Single Malt Scotch Whisky is the world's first single malt assembled from six different cask finishes. Bottled at 40% ABV in 750ml, this Highland single malt from The Dalmore in Alness, Ross-shire, marries whisky matured in small-batch bourbon casks, Matusalem Oloroso sherry butts, Madeira casks, Marsala casks, Port pipes, and Cabernet Sauvignon wine barriques into a single, seamless expression of the distillery's cask-curation mastery. Each component matures separately before the final assemblage, a feat of blending that took years to perfect.
The whisky takes its name from the legend at the heart of The Dalmore's identity: in 1263, an ancestor of Clan Mackenzie saved King Alexander III of Scotland from a charging stag, and the clan was granted the right to bear a 12-point royal stag on its crest. That stag has adorned The Dalmore's bottles through generations of Mackenzie stewardship, and King Alexander III stands as the range's most audacious tribute to the tale. The bottle's design, crowned by a silver stag, makes the connection impossible to miss.
Six casks yield kaleidoscopic complexity. The nose opens on red berry fruits with an exotic flicker of passion fruit. The palate weaves citrus zest, vanilla pod, creme caramel, and crushed almonds through the house notes of orange marmalade and chocolate, each cask surfacing in turn as the whisky opens. The finish is warm and elegantly spiced, with cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger fading slowly into soft oak. No single cask dominates; the achievement lies in the balance.
King Alexander III is a conversation piece as much as a dram, ideal for collectors, milestone gifts, and tastings built around the art of cask influence. Serve it neat and unhurried, revisiting the glass as different casks step forward, or pair it with duck, dark berries, or bitter chocolate to echo its wine-cask depths. Few whiskies tell their origin story so vividly, and fewer still pour it so generously. Offered to guests, it rarely needs a second introduction.
