Bunnahabhain is Islay's great contrarian: a distillery on Scotland's peatiest island that built its house style on unpeated malt. The Moine name, Gaelic for peat, marks the rare occasions the stills run smoky, and this 17 Year Old Triple Cask Finish is one of the most elaborate Moine bottlings ever assembled, created for the island's Feis Ile festival in 2023 and limited to just 1,740 bottles worldwide.
The whisky marries three separately matured parcels of peated spirit, all distilled in 2004 on the shores of the Sound of Islay. One portion rested its full seventeen years in bourbon casks, while the other two were finished in rum casks and Oloroso sherry casks respectively before master blender Julieann Fernandez brought the trio together. Her stated inspiration was rum and raisin ice cream, and the finished dram wears that idea openly.
Bottled at a natural-feeling 52.6% ABV, it opens with perfumed peat smoke wrapped around vanilla pod, grilled pineapple and salted raisin. The palate is lush and creamy, layering soft smoke over dark dried fruit, caramelized sugar and ripe banana, before a long finish where sherried richness and drifting embers trade the last word. The peat reads as fragrant and coastal rather than medicinal, true to Bunnahabhain's gentler coastline.
Festival releases from this distillery rarely travel far beyond the island, and a 17 year old peated example with three-cask architecture is a genuine outlier even among them. For collectors of Islay limited editions or drinkers chasing smoke with a sweet tooth, this is a singular bottle.
