When Buffalo Trace closed the books on the Single Oak Project in 2015, it did so with a verdict. After four years of staggered releases, thousands of enthusiasts had logged more than 5,000 reviews across all 192 experimental barrels, and the distillery crowned fan-voted Barrel 80 as the winner. Barrel 180, offered here, was one of the final-stretch bottlings evaluated as that verdict took shape, and it shares several traits the voting data favored.
The project's published findings noted that the bourbons rated best for aroma tended to be wheat-recipe whiskeys entered into the barrel at the gentler 105 proof, aged in wood cut from the bottom half of the tree with staves seasoned six months. Barrel 180 checks every one of those boxes: wheated mash, 105 entry proof, bottom-half oak, six-month seasoning, finished with a number 4 char in a wooden-rick warehouse.
Where the winning barrel leaned on a concrete-floor warehouse and heavier entry strength, Barrel 180 shows what the low-and-slow path produced instead. Tasters found a lighter, grain-driven bourbon, fresh-sawn wood, cereal sweetness and mixed orchard fruit, a rustic profile that reads more farmhouse than candy shop and rewards unhurried sipping.
Bottled at 90 proof in 375ml, this is bourbon history with a scorecard attached. The experiment settled questions distillers had argued over for generations, and each surviving bottle is one line of the evidence. Owning Barrel 180 means owning part of the dataset that decided what the crowd believed perfect bourbon should be.
