Blue Run High Rye Kentucky Straight Bourbon leans into the spicier side of the bourbon spectrum. Built on a mash bill of 65% yellow corn, 30% rye, and 5% malted barley, it carries nearly double the rye content of many traditional Kentucky recipes, trading soft sweetness for a livelier, more assertive pour bottled at a confident 111 proof.
This release holds a special place in the brand's catalog: it was the first Blue Run whiskey produced with Bourbon Hall of Famer Jim Rutledge directly overseeing production, rather than serving in his usual liquid advisor role. Rutledge, the longtime Four Roses master distiller, ran the spirit at the historic Castle & Key Distillery in Frankfort, applying decades of high-rye recipe experience to a fresh canvas.
Just 100 barrels were chosen for the bottling. Each cask was toasted and finished to a #4 alligator char, then matured in warehouses in Frankfort and Bardstown, letting two distinct pockets of central Kentucky climate work on the liquid. The result is a small-batch bourbon with real backbone, where the deep char pulls out toffee and roasted oak while the rye keeps the palate bright and peppery.
In the glass, expect caramel and vanilla up front, quickly joined by cracked black pepper, cinnamon, and a savory rye snap that carries through a long, warming finish. It stands up beautifully neat, opens nicely with a few drops of water, and has the proof and spice to anchor a serious Manhattan or Old Fashioned. For drinkers who find standard-recipe bourbons a touch too gentle, this is the bottle that answers back.
