The Balvenie Vintage Cask 1972 is a single cask, single malt Scotch whisky bottled at 47.3% ABV (94.6 proof) in a 700ml format, drawn from stock distilled in 1972 at The Balvenie in Dufftown, Speyside. The Vintage Cask series saw the distillery bottle individual casks from treasured old vintages by hand, each cask yielding only a small run of numbered bottles with the cask particulars stated on the label.
Several casks were bottled from the 1972 vintage in the mid-2000s, with documented examples including casks 14613, 14811 and 14816, each producing runs on the order of 135 to 162 bottles after more than three decades of maturation. Because this is a general listing rather than a listing for one stated cask, the label on the bottle itself carries the definitive cask number, bottle number and bottling details; the vintage and the 47.3% bottling strength are the constants across the release.
The 1972 Vintage Cask earned serious critical honors: at the 2007 World Whiskies Awards a release from this vintage was named World's Best Vintage Speyside and took the overall World's Best Speyside trophy, alongside a Gold Editor's Choice from Whisky Magazine. Reviewers found an exuberant, estery old-Speyside profile, very ripe pineapple, banana and rum butter on the nose, with orange, smoky oak and cocoa on the palate, while noting that individual casks naturally vary.
Whisky distilled in 1972 predates almost everything on the modern shelf, yet it comes from a distillery whose methods barely moved: family-owned since William Grant founded it in 1892, still malting on its own floors, still growing barley, still keeping coopers and coppersmiths at work. A bottle like this is drinking history from Speyside's patient heart, distilled before most of today's whisky makers were born and bottled by hand when it was ready. Store it upright, out of the light, and open it only for an occasion that deserves it.
