The Balvenie 14 Year Old American Bourbon Barrel, from A Collection of Curious Casks, is a single malt Scotch whisky bottled at 48.1% ABV (96.2 proof) for the US market, distilled at The Balvenie in Dufftown, Speyside, and matured for fourteen years in American bourbon casks. It is the unusual Balvenie that carries a whisper of smoke, and the story of how that smoke got there is the reason this series exists.
A Collection of Curious Casks launched in July 2024 within The Balvenie's Stories range, celebrating the collaboration between Malt Master Kelsey McKechnie and warehouse and samples specialist George Paterson, whose warehouse tastings surfaced rare whiskies and casks that refused to behave typically. This edition began as unpeated spirit, yet residues left in the distilling equipment after a peated run lent it a subtle smoky thread, an accident of the stillhouse that fourteen years in bourbon oak turned into a signature.
McKechnie is the first woman to hold the Malt Master role in The Balvenie's history, appointed apprentice at 26 and trained for years under David C. Stewart MBE before formally succeeding him in 2023. Curious Casks is her sensibility in bottle form: rigorous Speyside craft from the family-owned, five-rare-crafts distillery founded in 1892, applied to casks chosen precisely because they are outliers.
In the glass, velvety sweetness meets rich toffee, smouldering oak, crisp citrus and honeyed musk on the nose, while the palate grounds candied orange peel in roasted malt, earthy wood and deep vanilla oakiness, with that gentle smoke drifting through the finish. It is a fascinating pour for Balvenie devotees who think they know the house style, and a limited release unlikely to be repeated in this exact form. The 2024 collection also included an 18 year old French Pineau cask, an 11 year old Hungarian red wine cask for travel retail and a distillery-only 17 year old new Spanish oak edition, but the American Bourbon Barrel is the release US drinkers can realistically pour, and the one that tells the series' founding story best.
