Marking two decades of experimentation, the Madeira Cask Finish arrived in October 2024 as the twentieth release in Woodford Reserve's Master's Collection — the innovation series through which the Versailles distillery honors the pioneering methods of its nineteenth-century founders by reimagining one facet of whiskey making each year. For this anniversary chapter, Master Distiller Elizabeth McCall reached across the Atlantic to the Madeira Islands off the coast of Portugal.
Madeira casks are prized in the whiskey world for the dried fruit, spice, and nutty richness left behind by the fortified wine they once held, yet they had never anchored a Master's Collection release before. McCall experimented with finishing bourbon, rye, and wheat whiskies in these barrels, discovering that each style took on a distinctly fruit-forward character. The finished whiskies were then married with Woodford Reserve's Kentucky straight wheat whiskey to build the final blend, which was bottled at the house proof of 90.4 in a 700ml presentation.
The distillery's tasting notes read like a holiday larder: dark cherries, brown sugar, and candied oranges sprinkled with clove and nutmeg on the nose, followed by robust dried-fruit flavors of raisin and dried cranberry on the palate. Those fade gracefully into walnut and baking spice before a long, candied-walnut finish closes the pour — a profile that flatters both neat sipping and a slow evening by the fire.
Twentieth-release milestones do not come around twice, and McCall herself framed the bottling as a celebration of everything the Master's Collection has explored since its inception. For devotees of wine-finished American whiskey, this is among the most distinctive expressions Woodford has produced, and its anniversary status gives it a permanence in the series' story that few other editions can claim. It slots naturally beside the collection's earlier cask-finished chapters on any well-curated whiskey shelf.
