The 2023 Yellowstone Limited Edition Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey is a 101 proof (50.5% ABV) blend of 7-, 13-, and 16-year Kentucky straight bourbons finished in Tokaji casks sourced from northern Hungary, limited to 30,000 bottles.
Tokaji is one of the world's storied sweet wines, produced in Hungary's Tokaji region exclusively from white wine grapes — and for 2023, Master Distiller Stephen Beam took the series' finishing program in a new direction: unlike the 2021 and 2022 editions, which finished only select younger barrels, he hand-selected the three component bourbons, married them together, and then rested the completed blend in the Hungarian casks. “With each year's Yellowstone Limited Edition offering, I seek a finish that I both personally love and believe will make for a flavorful, well-balanced bourbon,” Beam said. “This year, I found the perfect finish in the Tokaji casks sourced from northern Hungary.”
The distillery describes aromas of honey, green grapes, and freshly baked cinnamon; a body that opens with dry spice before caramel, dark cherry, citrus, and white pepper; and a finish of dry tobacco, honeysuckle, and smoky oak. A limited allocation of 10,000 three-bottle cases rolled out nationwide starting in August 2023, in the custom embossed bottle with natural cork, the 2023 Limited Edition emblem, and a 101-proof callout on the label.
In a series defined by one-and-done cask experiments — Armagnac in 2020, Amarone in 2021, Marsala Superiore in 2022 — the 2023 edition is the Hungarian chapter — and unlike the two editions before it, which finished only select 7-year barrels, it rested the entire completed blend, extra-aged stock included, in the finishing casks. The Yellowstone brand behind it dates to 1872, named in honor of Yellowstone National Park and returned to family hands in 2015 by Beam, a seventh-generation distiller descended from both the Beam and Dant lines. For collectors of wine-finished bourbon, this is a profile no other Yellowstone release repeats.
