Woodford Reserve's Master's Collection exists to answer a question the distillery has asked since the 1800s: what happens when one variable of bourbon making is pushed somewhere new? Within that innovation series, Batch Proof is the annual expression that isolates the most elemental variable of all — proof itself. Rather than reducing the whiskey with limestone-filtered water to the house strength of 90.4, the team bottles the batch at whatever strength the barrels naturally deliver.
The 2023 edition, unveiled at the end of May 2023, was assembled by Master Distiller Elizabeth McCall with Master Distiller Emeritus Chris Morris from more than one hundred barrels of fully matured Woodford Reserve. Those barrels came from different production dates, different warehouses, and different floors within those warehouses, so the marriage captures a genuine cross-section of the maturing stocks in a given year. Once vatted, the batch registered 124.7 proof, and it went into the bottle at exactly that number.
At full strength, the sweet aromatics, fruit, spice, wood, and grain characteristics of the triple pot-distilled spirit arrive in concentrated form. The 2023 batch leads with a potent burst of sweet vanilla and toasted oak, framed by the pepper-and-caramel interplay that the 72% corn, 18% rye, and 10% malted barley grain bill reliably produces. A few drops of water unfold additional layers of dried fruit and spice, letting the drinker choose the dilution the distillery declined to perform.
Because the composition of the batch shifts with every vintage, no two years of Batch Proof taste quite alike, and the 2023 bottling documents its year the way a vintage wine documents a harvest. Presented in the series' 700ml format, it is an essential data point for anyone charting the arc of Woodford's cask-strength program — and simply a generous, unrestrained pour of the distillery's signature bourbon.
