The 2023 Dragon's Milk Origin Toasted Barrel Small Batch Bourbon is built around that craft: fully matured Michigan pot-still bourbon given a second rest inside hand-selected, deeply toasted oak, where slow-roasted vanillin and confectionery sweetness seep steadily into the spirit.
The bourbon underneath earns the treatment. New Holland Spirits distills the Origin line on a prohibition-era copper pot still in Holland, Michigan, working from a high-malt recipe of 70% corn, 25% malted barley, and 5% rye fermented with house yeast. More than five years in charred new American oak set the caramel backbone before each 2023 batch moved into its toasted finishing cask, then went to glass at full barrel strength, roughly 116 to 124 proof depending on the batch.
Poured, the 2023 edition opens on toasted marshmallow, candied almond, and dark cherry. The palate is dense and pastry-like, layering brown-sugar glaze, vanilla custard, and soft rye spice over an oily pot-still texture, before a warm finale of roasted oak and bittersweet chocolate settles in.
Issued semi-annually in runs of one hundred barrels or fewer, the Toasted Barrel program lets tasters track how a single house distillate answers different toast levels year after year.
