2023 Ichiro's Malt Chichibu The US Edition is the sixth annual release in the Chichibu Distillery's US-exclusive series — a cask-strength single malt vatted by founder Ichiro Akuto specifically for the American market, a tradition that began in 2018. For 2023, Akuto returned to smoke: a heavily peated vatting of fourteen casks, aged four to seven years, that revisits the direction of the peated 2020 edition with more mature stock.
Bottled at 53.5% ABV (107 proof) without chill filtration or coloring, the 2023 edition shows how Chichibu's peated spirit develops with a few more years in the distillery's Saitama warehouses. Fermented in mizunara washbacks, distilled on two small Forsyth pot stills, and matured through extreme continental seasons, it carries dense smoke without losing the fruit that defines the house.
The nose leads with earthy peat smoke over rich malt, honey, and orchard fruit, with a citrus lift and cask spice beneath. The palate is full and oily at cask strength — smoky barley, baked apple, toffee, and pepper — closing on a long, warming finish where ash and sweetness fade together.
A standout for smoke lovers and a natural pair with the 2020 peated edition. Sip neat, adding a few drops of water to open the fruit.
