The 2022 edition marks a turning point for the Komagatake annual bottling. Where earlier years leaned on one-off experiments, this release was conceived as a definitive house style — the clearest expression yet of what the Nagano stillhouse wants its signature single malt to taste like, refined and repeated at a more ambitious scale.
The recipe starts in the mash: predominantly unpeated barley with a measured portion peated to a gentle 3.5 parts per million, enough to add shadow without smoke ever taking the lead. Distillation runs through copper pot stills fed by snowmelt from the surrounding Kiso peaks, producing a clean, orchard-fruited new make.
Maturation is where the 2022 gets its complexity, drawing on three cask types — ex-bourbon for vanilla and coconut, sherry for dried fruit, and port for a ribbon of red berry. It was bottled at 50% without chill filtration, and 9,516 bottles reached the United States, a larger allocation than previous years that nonetheless moved quickly.
On the nose, crisp apple and stone fruit mingle with raspberry and vanilla bean. The palate brings malt sugars, plum, milk chocolate, and baking spice, closing on toasted oak with the faintest curl of distant smoke. A versatile pour: bright enough for a highball, structured enough to sip neat.
