Louisville artist Lynn Dunbar painted “Winter Spirit,” the image carried by the 2018 holiday liter. Her scene shows snow-draped bourbon barrels resting outside the Scale House, part of the National Historic Landmark grounds where distilling has been traced back to 1812. Dunbar works largely en plein air, and the label preserves that immediacy — warm barn reds and lamplight glowing against white drifts.
Add the hand signature on this bottle and a one-season release becomes a true keepsake. The 2018 edition holds a special spot in the holiday artwork run because it looks past the architecture to the barrels themselves, quietly resting through the cold months while the whiskey inside keeps maturing regardless of the weather.
What fills the liter is the standard Distiller's Select Kentucky straight bourbon: 90.4 proof, born of a grain bill led by corn at 72% with 18% rye and 10% malted barley, then aged to maturity in new charred oak. Nothing about the recipe changes for winter — only the canvas on the glass.
In the glass it offers honeyed apple, cinnamon, and vanilla up front, then layers of toffee, clove, dark chocolate, and soft leather before a lingering spiced finish. Build it into an old fashioned on a cold evening, or sip it neat while the signed Dunbar label does the decorating.
