This 2002 bottling of Jack Daniel's Old No. 7 Brand Green Label is an 80 proof (40% ABV) Tennessee Whiskey carrying no age statement, made at the Jack Daniel Distillery in Lynchburg, Moore County, Tennessee. It dates from the period when Green Label still occupied a clearly separate rung from Black Label — lighter in body and lower in strength — and that distinction is the reason a bottle from this specific year reads differently to a collector than a later one.
In 2002, Old No. 7 Black Label was still being sold at 86 proof across most of the country. Green Label sat six proof points beneath it at 80, and that gap was part of how the two were positioned against each other. Brown-Forman spent the next couple of years quietly bringing Black Label down to 80 as well, introducing the lower strength in a handful of states and export markets first and completing the transition in 2004. After that the two labels shared a strength, and the difference between them narrowed to maturation alone. A 2002 Green Label predates that flattening.
The whiskey was made the way all Jack Daniel's is made: a corn-led mash with rye and malted barley, fermented, distilled, then dripped through ten feet of sugar maple charcoal before barreling. That charcoal mellowing — the Lincoln County Process — is what makes it Tennessee whiskey rather than bourbon. Green Label's own signature came from barrel placement, with its stock drawn from the ground floor of the rack houses. Those barrels sit through smaller seasonal temperature swings than the ones stacked above them, so the wood gives up less color and less tannin over the same span of years.
Jimmy Bedford was master distiller throughout this period, holding the role from 1988 until 2007 — only the sixth person to do so since the distillery was registered in 1866, the first in the United States to be registered. Green Label was never one of the bottles he was asked to talk about publicly; it was the everyday, half-the-country expression that ran alongside the famous one.
That obscurity is precisely what makes it collectible now. Green Label was rarely stocked outside its home markets, seldom advertised, and easy to overlook, so surviving bottles with an identifiable year are uncommon relative to the ocean of Black Label from the same era.
