1993 Glenmorangie Ealanta Private Edition American Virgin Oak 19 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky is the fourth release in Glenmorangie's Private Edition series, launched in 2013 at 92 proof (46% ABV). Distilled in 1993 at Glenmorangie Distillery in Tain, in the Scottish Highlands, and matured for a full 19 years, this limited edition became one of the most decorated whiskies the distillery has ever released. It arrived as the follow-up to Artein, carrying both a vintage and an age statement, rarities within a series that usually declared neither.
Ealanta, Scots Gaelic for skilled and ingenious per the distillery, took a path almost unheard of in Scotch whisky: full-term maturation in heavily charred virgin American white oak. The casks were coopered from slow-grown oak harvested in the Mark Twain National Forest of Missouri, wood more commonly destined for bourbon barrels. Dr Bill Lumsden, Glenmorangie's Director of Distilling and Whisky Creation, laid down the experiment in 1993 and waited nearly two decades to bottle the result. Virgin oak, standard practice for bourbon but rare in Scotland, gives up its sugars and spice far faster than refill wood, making a 19-year rest in heavily charred new barrels a genuine gamble.
The virgin oak delivers butterscotch, vanilla fudge, candied orange and toasted spice over Glenmorangie's delicate Highland spirit, with a creamy sweetness reviewers likened to American cream soda and milk chocolate. The whisky's crowning moment came when Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2014 named Ealanta its World Whisky of the Year with a score of 97.5 points, praising, per the author, its extraordinary length and near perfection.
That award transformed Ealanta from series curiosity to landmark. It stands as the Private Edition line's most celebrated release, a vintage-dated, age-stated rarity in a series that often carried neither, and a direct ancestor of Glenmorangie's later virgin-oak work. For collectors of modern Highland whisky, the 1993 Ealanta is a definitive bottling: a one-time release whose reputation has only grown since the last bottles left Tain.
