The 1978 Glenmorangie Pride 34 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky is a 1-litre Highland rarity bottled at 47.4% ABV (94.8 proof) — just 700 bottles worldwide. Distilled in 1978 at Glenmorangie's home in Tain, Ross-shire, and unveiled in 2014, it was introduced by the house as its rarest and most exquisite whisky to date, a crowning achievement for Dr Bill Lumsden, Glenmorangie's celebrated director of distilling and whisky creation. It remains one of the oldest vintage statements the Highland house has ever brought to market.

Pride 1978 began as a 19-year-old vintage resting in Glenmorangie's warehouses. Lumsden then transferred the spirit into just five casks that had previously held a legendary French Bordeaux Premier Grand Cru Classé claret, where it slumbered for a further 15 years — the longest extra-maturation of any Glenmorangie single malt to date. Bottled in 2012 at 34 years old, the whisky emerged, in Lumsden's words, 'a luxurious burnished copper with rich, decadent and delicious scents of chestnut, toffee and cherries.' The claret casks lent structure and dark-fruit depth no bourbon barrel could give, layered over the hallmark elegance of spirit from Scotland's tallest stills.

Glenmorangie launched Pride 1978 in July 2014 at Academy Mansion on Manhattan's Upper East Side, unveiling it alongside a collaboration with acclaimed British artist Idris Khan. Born the same year the casks were laid down, Khan created 'Disappearing Casks,' a limited-edition artwork inspired by the barrels resting in Tain, to accompany each bottle of the release. The pairing of art and whisky underscored the house's famous 'Unnecessarily Well Made' ethos.

With only 700 examples in existence, presented in the generous 1-litre format, Pride 1978 stands among the scarcest bottlings Glenmorangie has ever offered. It is the second chapter in the distillery's flagship Pride series and a definitive statement of the wine-cask extra-maturation Lumsden pioneered — claret-influenced Highland malt at the summit of the house's range. For serious Glenmorangie collectors, the Pride series is the pinnacle, and the 1978 its most tightly limited release.
