Fortaleza Anejo Lot 43-A is an Anejo Tequila from Destileria La Fortaleza in Tequila, Jalisco, Mexico. This release is the companion to Lot 42-A and one of the two most legendary "mistake batches" in modern tequila collecting, bottled at 80 proof, additive-free.
Like its companion, Lot 43-A is rumored to contain a proportion of unreleased 48-month Extra Anejo that was accidentally married into a standard Anejo run just before bottling. Tequila Fortaleza has never confirmed the rumor, and the distillery has never released an Extra Anejo to market, which is what makes both lots so heavily collected. Production otherwise follows Fortaleza's traditional methods at NOM 1493: 100 percent estate Blue Weber agave, brick-oven slow cooking, tahona stone-wheel extraction, open-air wooden vat fermentation, double distillation in small copper pot stills, and approximately eighteen months in American oak.
On the nose, it shows cooked agave layered with rich caramel, vanilla, oak, dried fruit, and baking spice. The palate brings deeper oak integration, dried-fruit richness, and a more layered complexity than the standard Anejo, and the finish carries a long, tannic close.
Lot 43-A is the second of the two "shadow Extra Anejo" releases collectors track, sitting alongside Lot 42-A as the rarest of Fortaleza's standard-label Anejo bottlings. It drinks well neat or over a single large cube.
