Buffalo Trace Distillery

Established in the heart of Kentucky, Buffalo Trace Distillery holds the distinction of being the oldest continuously operating distillery in the United States.Its origins trace back to 1775, when early American pioneers, led by Hancock and Willis Lee, began distilling whiskey on the banks of the Kentucky River near what would become Frankfort.


The site would later evolve into a formal distillery under the stewardship of Colonel Edmund Haynes Taylor, Jr., a pivotal figure in the modernization of bourbon production during the 19th century. Taylor's innovations, including the introduction of copper fermentation tanks and modern sanitation, set enduring standards for the industry.In 1870, George T. Stagg acquired the site, ushering in an era of expansion and industrialization.


Under Stagg’s guidance, the distillery became one of the most technically advanced operations of its time, with new warehouses and steam heating systems that revolutionized aging practices. Despite the challenges posed by Prohibition in the 1920s, the distillery remained operational under a special government license to produce medicinal whiskey—a rare allowance that enabled it to survive when many others were shuttered.


It is this continuity that lends Buffalo Trace its historic gravitas, marking it as a living thread in the tapestry of American whiskey.The distillery's modern name, Buffalo Trace, was adopted in 1999 to honor the ancient paths carved by bison through the Kentucky wilderness—trails that settlers would follow westward, bringing with them a spirit of exploration and perseverance. Today, Buffalo Trace Distillery remains a custodian of heritage, producing a range of revered bourbon labels including Eagle Rare, W.L. Weller, and the highly sought-after Pappy Van Winkle.


The distillery has garnered international acclaim not only for its products but also for its dedication to craftsmanship, tradition, and innovation. As both a working distillery and a historical landmark, Buffalo Trace stands as a monument to America’s enduring relationship with bourbon. Its preserved architecture, extensive archives, and active aging warehouses provide a tangible link to the past, offering scholars and enthusiasts alike a glimpse into the evolution of American whiskey. In preserving its legacy while embracing modern techniques, Buffalo Trace continues to shape the story of bourbon into the 21st century and beyond.
