Orphan Barrel · Release Guide

Orphan Barrel.

A year-by-year cheat sheet for every Orphan Barrel release

Every Orphan Barrel release is a discovery. The premise is right in the name: barrels found set aside in the Stitzel-Weller and other Diageo warehouses, aged long past anyone's plan for them, bottled and named rather than blended back into something ordinary. Some are old enough to predate the distillery's current era. Each release is its own one-off, a specific stock of barrels with a specific age, given a name and never made again once the barrels run dry.

For collectors and enthusiasts, that's the appeal and the catch. There's no "next batch" to wait for. A 20-year release pours nothing like a 14; a found-bourbon stock drinks differently than a found rye. Below is the working reference we keep at Cana, every Orphan Barrel release in order, with proof, age, the source story where it's known, and the production notes that explain what each bottle actually was before it was found.

How to read this table

Proof is bottle proof, uncut and unfiltered. Age is years and months from the day it entered the barrel to the day it was bottled. Warehouse is the rickhouse letter where the barrels matured — multiple letters mean a release was a blend of barrels from more than one rickhouse. Floor is the floor (or floors) those barrels rested on. Higher floors run hotter and yield more aggressive evaporation; lower floors are cooler and slower.
