History of Buffalo Trace
1773 – Hancock and Willis Lee settle along the Kentucky River, near where the distillery stands today.
1792 – Kentucky becomes a state, and settlers begin producing whiskey in the area.
1812 – The first official distillery is built on the site by Harrison Blanton, one of the earliest recorded distillers.
1857 – The distillery begins using steam power, one of the first in Kentucky to do so.
1869 – Edmund H. Taylor Jr. purchases the distillery, modernizing operations and renaming it O.F.C. (Old Fire Copper) Distillery.
1878 – Taylor sells the distillery to George T. Stagg due to financial difficulties.
1904 – The distillery is officially renamed George T. Stagg Distillery under new ownership.
1920-1933 – Prohibition era; the distillery is one of the few allowed to produce medicinal whiskey.
1933 – Prohibition ends, and production ramps up again.
1949 – Albert B. Blanton, longtime distillery leader, passes away.
1952 – Elmer T. Lee joins the distillery, later revolutionizing the industry with single-barrel bourbon.
1984 – Blanton’s Single Barrel Bourbon is introduced, pioneering the single-barrel category.
1992 – The distillery is purchased by the Sazerac Company.
1999 – The facility is rebranded as Buffalo Trace Distillery, honoring the ancient buffalo migration paths in the region.
2000 – Buffalo Trace Bourbon is released, becoming the distillery’s flagship brand
2013 – Buffalo Trace announces plans to expand due to increased demand.
2021 – A $1.2 billion expansion begins, including additional warehouses, new stills, and bottling lines.
Present – Buffalo Trace continues to produce some of the world’s most sought-after bourbons, including Pappy Van Winkle, W.L. Weller, Eagle Rare, and the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection.
