Woodford Reserve Master's Collection Aged Cask 92.4 Proof (46.2% ABV) is a high-intent 2011 technical release from the Woodford Reserve Distillery. Dropping as one-half of a historic "Rare Rye" dual-maturation experiment, this expression showcases the uncommon industrial methodology of aging a domestic rye distillate within used wood. Utilizing an atypical 100% rye mash bill (incorporating malted rye to drive enzymatic conversion), the spirit was 100% copper pot distilled before entering the barrel at a low 86 entry proof.
Rather than traditional charred oak, primary maturation occurred entirely inside recycled refill casks that previously held mature bourbon. Matured within heat-cycled stone warehouses, this lack of fresh char altered the standard chemical extraction matrix, shifting the spotlight off wood-derived vanillins and heavy tannins to emphasize raw fruit esters, bright citrus oils, and grassy grain notes. The resulting liquid is highly specific and lighter in density, providing a definitive benchmark for collectors tracking the flavor contribution of secondary refill wood on a pure rye mash.
