Woodford Reserve Distillery Series Toasted Oak Oat Grain is a highly specialized, limited-edition experimental allocation released in June 2022. Masterminded by Master Distiller Chris Morris and Assistant Master Distiller Elizabeth McCall, this expression utilizes a unique oat grain mash bill. After undergoing initial primary maturation in standard new charred American white oak barrels, the fully matured Oat Grain Bourbon was transferred into specialized, secondary new barrels that were heavily toasted but uncharred.
This secondary wood exposure allowed the liquid to pull sweet, caramelized wood sugars without the heavy, smoky interference of char. Bottled at the distillery’s hallmark 90.4 proof, the resulting technical framework yields a remarkably soft, porridge-like creaminess. The profile exhibits a topaz color and opens with rich aromas of cinnamon raisin oatmeal cookies, cocoa, and dark molasses, developing on the palate into sharp spice notes of clove, nutmeg, and citrus before wrapping up with a dry finish highlighted by hints of chocolate bitters.
