Woodford Reserve 2016 Distillery Series Five Malt Whiskey is bottled at 90.4 Proof by the Woodford Reserve Distillery in Versailles, Kentucky. Though labeled with the series' 2015 inception year, this experimental small batch officially debuted in 2016. Master Distiller Chris Morris drew direct technical inspiration from micro-brewery craft beer styles. The mash bill departs completely from traditional bourbon by utilizing a 100% malted grain recipe composed of five distinct grains: Standard Two-Row barley, Wheat malt, Pale Chocolate barley, Kiln Coffee barley, and Carafa barley.
Following triple-distillation in copper pot stills, the spirit underwent a targeted six-month maturation cycle inside recycled Woodford Reserve Double Oaked barrels. This brief aging timeline provides minimal wood exposure to avoid over-oaking. The specific barrel chemistry instead isolates rich beer-like attributes, delivering prominent notes of toasted malt, warming milk chocolate, citrus oils, and a roasted coffee bean finish.
