Sazerac 18 Year Old 2009 Release is a technical continuation of the historic 1985 distillation lot, which is famously rumored to have been produced at either the Old Bernheim Distillery or George T. Stagg Distillery. This spirit underwent 18 years of primary maturation in new charred American white oak before reaching peak maturity in 2003, at which point the remaining stock was transferred into stainless steel vats to arrest further wood interaction.
This preservation method allowed Buffalo Trace to provide absolute profile consistency for the annual releases spanning 2005 to 2015. Bottled at 90 proof, this 2009 edition showcases the stabilized structural framework of the 1985 distillate, characterized by its signature high-viscosity body and herbal tea notes. Critics from Whisky Advocate note a profile that, while showing a slightly higher oak presence than earlier tanked vintages, maintains a sophisticated balance of brittle mint, vanilla, and dark fruit esters.
