Sazerac 18 Year Old 2002 Release is a foundational entry in the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection, representing a technical milestone in the preservation of heritage rye stocks. Distilled in the spring of 1984, this spirit was sourced from a legendary batch of barrels produced during a transitionary era in Kentucky distilling. To arrest the maturation process and prevent over-oaking, this 1984 distillate was batched and transferred into tanks, a preservation method that allowed the spirit to be spread across the 2002, 2003, and 2004 annual releases.
This "tanking" ensured that the liquid maintained its 18-year structural integrity, characterized by delicate floral esters, herbal mint, and dried red fruits. Bottled at a steady 90 proof, the profile retains the viscous mouthfeel and concentrated spice of the original 1980s stock, serving as a primary technical benchmark for the evolution of the series.
