Woodford Reserve Distillery Series Red Corn Bourbon is a Kentucky Straight Bourbon from Woodford Reserve Distillery in Versailles, Kentucky. The Distillery Series is Master Distiller Elizabeth McCall's small-batch line for experimenting with one of bourbon's five sources of flavor, and this release puts grain in the spotlight at 90.4 proof.
The bourbon is built on an heirloom red corn variety grown on a local farm adjacent to the historic distillery in Versailles. Unlike traditional yellow corn, the deep-pigmented variety carries robust, savory, and spicy character into the spirit. A severe storm during the growing season damaged much of the crop, cutting the yield and making the remaining bottling especially rare.
On the nose, it shows spiced cherry, green apple, a hint of magnolia, light caramel, and nutmeg. The palate brings a warm medley of baking spices - clove, cinnamon, and nutmeg - alongside pecan, walnut, dried cherry, and sun tea, and the finish carries baking spice, dried fruit, and sun tea.
Released in a 375ml format, this Distillery Series bottling is sold at the distillery and through limited Kentucky retailers. Bottled at 90.4 proof, it drinks well neat or over a single large cube and shows off Woodford's grain-led approach for collectors of the Distillery Series.
