2019 Clase Azul Dia de los Muertos is the inaugural Day of the Dead release in the Clase Azul Tequila lineup - the bottle that started the brand's annual Dia de los Muertos tradition. Limited to 1,800 hand-numbered ceramic decanters worldwide, the 2019 release is a Joven blend of Clase Azul Plata, Clase Azul Reposado, and a touch of Clase Azul Ultra, bottled at 80 proof / 40% ABV with a 100% organic Highland Blue Weber agave mash.
Clase Azul Tequila is produced at Productos Finos de Agave (NOM 1416) in Jesus Maria, Los Altos de Jalisco - the Highland tequila region. Founded by Arturo Lomeli in 1997, Clase Azul is one of the most recognizable artisan tequila brands in the world, known as much for what's inside the bottle as for the bottle itself: each iconic hand-painted ceramic Clase Azul decanter is shaped, fired, and painted by hand by more than 100 artisans in the village of Santa Maria Canchesda, Mexico, and finished with platinum, silver, and 24-karat gold detail on the higher-end expressions.
The Clase Azul Dia de los Muertos series is the brand's annual hand-painted ceramic tribute to the Mexican Day of the Dead - Mexico's most iconic celebration of life, memory, and the cycle that connects the living and the departed. Each annual release carries a distinct decanter design, a specific tequila profile, and a small production run aimed squarely at collectors of Clase Azul limited editions.
The 2019 ceramic decanter is finished in a matte black glaze with 24-karat gold accent detailing - skull motifs and elegant spirals wrapping around the bottle. The spiral design represents the eternal cycle of life: everything has a beginning and an end, and the cycle continues. The visual narrative depicts the journey of the departed from Mictlan back to the land of the living, where they reunite among the flowers and colors of the Day of the Dead celebration.
On the nose, it shows sweet cooked agave layered with caramel, vanilla, and tropical fruit. The palate brings rich agave, soft spice, and notes from the Ultra component - dried fruit, oak, and a touch of sherry-cask sweetness - and the finish carries a long, layered close.
