Clase Azul Master Artisans Guirnalda is one of three sister releases in the Clase Azul Master Artisans Extra Anejo trio (Canela, Guirnalda, and Cobalto). The Guirnalda edition - guirnalda is Spanish for "garland" - houses an 8+ year Extra Anejo tequila in a hand-painted ceramic decanter built around a stylized flower-garland motif rendered through a paint-thinning technique that produces a soft watercolor effect across the bottle's surface. Bottled at 80 proof / 40% ABV with a 100% organic Highland Blue Weber agave mash.
Clase Azul Tequila is produced at Productos Finos de Agave (NOM 1416) in Jesus Maria, Los Altos de Jalisco - the Highland tequila region. Founded by Arturo Lomeli in 1997, Clase Azul is one of the most recognizable artisan tequila brands in the world, known as much for what's inside the bottle as for the bottle itself: each iconic hand-painted ceramic Clase Azul decanter is shaped, fired, and painted by hand by more than 100 artisans in the village of Santa Maria Canchesda, Mexico.
The Clase Azul Master Artisans collection is the brand's collaboration program with Mexico's most celebrated craftspeople. Each Master Artisans release pairs a uniquely designed hand-painted ceramic decanter - the work of a guest master artisan or a specific Mexican craft tradition - with an ultra-aged Extra Anejo tequila developed by Master Distiller Viridiana Tinoco. The Extra Anejo at the center of the series is aged more than 8 years total: first in American whiskey casks, then split through three sherry casks (Amontillado, Oloroso, and Pedro Ximenez), and finished in wine casks from the Portuguese island of Madeira.
The watercolor technique on the Guirnalda decanter is uncommon in glazed ceramic work - the paint is deliberately thinned and layered so the underlying ceramic shows through, mimicking the wash-and-bleed character of traditional watercolor on paper. The result is a decanter that reads softer and more atmospheric than the brand's typical cobalt-and-white core lineup.
On the nose, it shows roasted cooked agave layered with caramel, dried fruit, and gentle baking spice. The palate brings rich agave wrapped in dark caramel, dried fig, vanilla, and a touch of cinnamon and dark chocolate from the dual-cask aging, and the finish carries a long, refined close with Madeira-driven oak and fruit.
